InProcess:ing and Madlab are pleased to welcome Evan Raskob – founder and organiser of Openlab Workshops – making art and music with open source/free software around London and the UK.

This condensed one-day version of the regular Openlab 5-evening course will be a relaxed but project-focused introduction to programing in Processing and interactive art and design in general. We will spend the bulk of the day on basic methods of working with code, general workflow and feeling your way around the Processing environment, along the way building some small projects and gaining inspiration from art, design and technologies such as Wii remotes, RFID, OSC, video and more. The material is flexible, based on the needs and wishes of the people attending.

UPDATE: We’re really pleased the workshop is fully subscribed – but do get in touch if you’ve missed out and are disapponted – info [at] cybersonica.net (a stand in contact address ’til the cybersonica.org mailserver gets sorted). We are hoping to run other Processing and related workshops in the future and we’d be keen to find out if there’s any interest.

“Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool.”

InProcess:ing focuses on the Processing language, environment and community as the vehicle to support and encourage creative collaboration and meaningful exchange between a diverse group of practitioners, creatives and hobbyists. It aims to create a playful, experimental space and a supportive framework in which people can share their work, realise new technological ideas, be inspired, challenged and stretched.

Join us at the launch event to see Processing in action, meet other interested and like-minded people and find out more about the project and how to get involved.

Participate…

Bring along Processing sketches you’re working on for our informal ‘open-laptop’ session between 7-8pm.

Contact us if you’d like one of the 10 minute ‘show-and-tell’ slots between 8-8.30pm to informally present a ‘work-in-progress’ to the group – or sign up at the event itself if a space is available.

Share links and a 100 word review of some of your favourite Processing work.

Special Presentation…

Learn how to make a 3D scan with a projector, camera, and Processing using a technique and open source tools – openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=1995 – developed by Kyle McDonald. Kyle will be making a telematic presentation about the history of “structured light” scanning, one of the techniques used for Radiohead’s recent “House of Cards” video. He’ll go over the basic theory on how it works, work through the process of capturing a bust in 3D and exporting it to Blender for further experimentation and finish up with some discussion on where to take the technique next.

Kyle McDonald is a media artist currently based in upstate New York. Kyle is heavily involved in the open-source tech scene, with work ranging from alternative sensors and interfaces to experimental noise instruments and immersive large-scale interactive installations. He is also a contributor to other projects like Open Frameworks, Processing and Arduino. Kyle is currently completing his Master of Fine Arts in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Madlab is a A 1000 sq. ft. former shop in the Northern Quarter of Manchester – a space you can get together with like-minded individuals and work on your urban gardening, crochet, hacking, programming, media arts, filmmaking, animating project without worrying that you’re in a library, coffee shop, pub or other unsuitable venue. We know hackers and craftspeople need work space and may need to get down and dirty – we also know sometimes you need a quiet area to present and show works to your peers – so Madlab is there to support both – and the interactions that result.

Cybersonica have been regular contributors to i-Design since its inception in 2007 and this year present: ‘Virtually Real’ – an exhibition of digital interactive artworks and installations, technology showcases and demonstrations in the Old Gymnasium; afternoon artist talks in Deep End; ‘5D Interludes’ as part of the main conference programme; and live performances as part of the i-Design 09 early evening showcase in the Old Cinema – the oldest cinema in the UK!

These various contributions present our unique – and often sonic – viewpoint on the i-Design 09 theme and how our “daily engagement with interactive stuff has made the inexorable move away from the office and desktop towards an experience that is decidedly in the real world”.

Featured artists and creative agencies include Squidsoup, The Sancho Plan, Soda and Fiddian Warman, Jason Bruges Studio, MOTH, SHOWStudio, Musion Academy, a selection of artistic work presented by Kinetica Museum and TINT and more guest contributors yet to be announced.

SoundLife London

is a unique sound composition created especially for Leicester Square Gardens by sound artist and musician Martyn Ware which reveals the 3-dimensional sound world that surrounds us at all times in the most fascinating and diverse city in the world.

SoundLife London plays continuously each day between 9am and 7pm. Sonic events occur on the hour, quarter, half, and three-quarter hours.

SoundLife London is an hour long, looped ‘soundscape’ mixing found and collected sounds with an ambient musical composition. It aims to augment the everyday background noise of Leicester Square with subtle melody and musical refrains that appear to float on the wind and distant sounds from the city moving ghostlike around the park.

A variety of sonic themes are introduced at ten minute intervals each hour throughout the day: 00 – Music | 10 – History | 20 – Locations | 30 – Theatre & Film | 40 – Ethnicity | 50 – Wildlife

Making SoundLife London

The London Borough of Westminster’s unique geography and demographic – from city centre to the river, street market to shopping mall, council estate to leafy suburb – provides a unique opportunity for the creators of SoundLife London to work with local residents to include sounds that reflect the makeup of their communities and
improve awareness of Westminster’s diverse cultures.

Audio clips for SoundLife London have been collected through an outreach and education programme in which a team from Future Of Sound, including musician Lewis Sykes and storyteller Natacha Bryan, ran a series of workshops with participating groups exploring the creative and practical challenges involved in collecting sounds which could be imagined as a ‘sonic postcard’ of their community and integrated into the 3D sound composition.

Participating Westminster Organisations

Barrow Hill Junior School, St John’s Wood
College Park School, Westbourne Green
Digital Media Unit, Bayswater
Ebury Bridge Youth Centre, Victoria
Open Age Hub, Victoria
Queens Park Play Group, Queens Park
St Marylebone C of E School, Marylebone

More information about SoundLife London can be found in Westminster Reference Library

Please visit the exhibit in the ibrary, on St Martin’s Street at the south side of Leicester Square, for a full background to the project, and to leave your comments.

SoundLife London has been made possible by

City of Westminster, Arts Council England, Illustrious, Arts Co, Future Of Sound, Audio Boo, Starbucks Coffee, AIG.

Threep & Vent Media, VC Kristi & Oddscene, Steve Nosurname & Barry Gene Murphy

Cybersonica Social creates a little slice of Cybersonica - London’s annual celebration of music, sound, art and technology – for a brief but enjoyable two hours this Sunday evening at the Kinetica Art Fair.

The seventh in a now somewhat irregular night, the evening features a select line-up of new and previously featured talent including the idiosyncratic granular textures and analogue rhythms of Threepaccompanied by the minimalist visual waveforms of Vent Media; the edgy electronic grooves and live, gutsy vocal FX of VC Kristi with the evolving and surrealist imagery of Oddscene; and the old-skool electro to 8-bit freakouts to drum n’ bass mentalism of Steve Nosurname with the kinetic and potent visuals of moving image artist Barry Gene Murphy.

Kinetica Art Fair, the UK’s first art fair dedicated to kinetic, robotic, sound, light and time-based art opens in London on Friday 27 February – and carnivorous art, man-animal-machine hybrids, mechanical drawing machines, subliminal installations, pole dancing robots, light sculptures and cybernetics are just some of the exhibits to be found there – providing unparalleled opportunities for the public and collectors alike to view and buy work from this thriving international movement and to participate in the programme of talks, workshops and performances.

Longtime Kinetica Museum collaborators, Cybersonica’s contribution to the Art Fair showcases established names and emerging talent who make their own music or audiovisual work using inventive technologies and then perform it live (as opposed to just pressing play in Ableton Live). We strongly recommend progressive electronic music makers, audiovisualisers, digital artists and fans looking for somewhere to meet like-minded people, share ideas and enjoy fresh, vibrant music and performance to come along and check it all out.
